My Plots

In Patois, a dialectal variant of the Franco-Provençal language spoken in the Aosta Valley, La Plantze means «terrace».

«Terraces» are the vineyards that occupy my working days, plots of land often held up by dry stone walls, typical of the Aosta Valley, which climb up even very steep slopes, at altitudes ranging from 600 to 1000 meters.

Each terrace is a parcel from which a few hundred bottles are obtained, the result of daily efforts to reach the vineyards and conduct a careful winegrowing, capable of responding to the challenges of the mountain environment.

The terraces I cultivate are «parcels» also because they are “parceled” within them, which means that they are divided into rows of different vines, according to the ancient farming custom to plant several varieties in the same plot to promote their ecosystem resilience, or their survival.

Where are

my plots found?

The plots I cultivate are located along the course of the Dora Baltea, in the central part of the Aosta Valley. Just a little over 6 hectares arranged along a strip of land which, going up from the municipality of Nus for about 500 meters, reaches the plots of Saint Pierre that exceed 800 meters of altitude.

The soil is entirely of morainic origin, deriving from ancient glaciers that dug the Dora Valley, sandy towards Aosta, where the climate is warmer and sunnier, and rocky in Villeneuve and Saint Pierre, where viticulture becomes truly heroic, among granite rocks. These are xeric environments characterized by an arid and dry climate; and phenomenal changes in temperature, mitigated by the heat that the stones accumulate during the day and release at night. In this typically mountainous area, the vineyards are terraced and divided into areas of just over 100 square meters, blown by a constant wind that helps keep the grapes cool and ward off fungal harm.

What I grow ?

The vines grown are often the ones that I have already found in the vineyards I have chosen to manage, a mix of native and rare varieties of the Aosta Valley: Petit Rouge, Cornalin, Fumin and Mayolet.

Over the years, I have started growing international vines such as Sauvignon Blanc, Viognieril Syrah, Merlot and Pinot Gris, knowing that, in this particular mountain ecosystem, any variety, if well managed and rightly adapted to the climate, can tell its personal story of the Aosta Valley terroir.
